Default 2 color halftone choke in illustrator

Hey everyone. I'm trying to create a 2-color design using halftones. I don't like just printing a halftone on top of an underbase because of how thick the ink turns out. So I'm trying to print it so that one halftone fits into the other half tone without an underbase.

My problem is I can't get my registration on exactly. Is there any way to get a choke or trap on your halftone dots using illustrator? Am I going about this the wrong way?

p.s. I'm running AccuRIP for my seperations if that helps.

You could do this in Photoshop, separate the colours and 'grow' the background around the halftones but halftones in Illustrator are a Postscript function and don't actually exist in AI.

Thanks Dave. Is there any way to make this work without applying the choke?

I'm not actually clear about what you're trying to do?

Sorry. I'm printing out a design which has a 2-color blend. So one color halftone fits exactly with another color halftone. I can't quite get them registered exactly together so some of the shirt shows through. I'm trying to solve that without just printing one color as a solid underbase below the other. (So that the shirt keeps a softer hand)
