Default is it possible to screen print onto a martial arts gi?

I know that, in general, martial arts gi's have patches/etc embroidered onto them.

But what I'm wondering is if you can screen print onto them? They are generally made of cotton, so I would expect that it shouldnt be a problem in terms of the materiel being able to handle it... but would the size/thickness of the gi's prove a problem?

Thanks guys - just doing some spitballing...

I have never tried, but I would assume it's not a problem. We can always use more adhesive to keep the gi down if necessary and if it's cotton it shouldn't be hard to screen onto. -Scott Lewis

Thickness won't be a problem. I don't recall exactly what a gi looks like - do they have a lot of stitching, kind of like quilting?

yes, they do have a fair amount of stitching (to help keep them from ripping apart from all the abuse)

Thought so; I think that is more likely to interfere with the print than anything else. I think you'd get better results with waterbased inks than plastisol. Soft furnishings are always printed with waterbased inks, because they hold up a lot better to abrasion. Normally that isn't so relevant with clothing But between grappling and other general abuse that this particular clothing receives, it might be.

When I was taking Shotokan, we had a Gi that we wore occasionally when we did exhibitions. It had our names screened on the back. That was over 15 years ago, and was way before I got in the business. So not sure what kind of inks they were done it. But they lasted a while.
