Hi guys just bought a used epson 4000 but it like new. There are only a 1000 prints on it. So the question I am asking is do I use pigment ink for it or dye based? I will only be printing film with this printer. I did Buy fastRip 9.0 pro from Ryonet but they sent me FastRip Classic Series 9.0 which I believe This will not work with the 4000. I hope the exchange will go smooth
Dye based inks will work much better when printing film. I think the 4000 series is a dye based system to begin with and the 4800 and above are pigment. Of course, if I'm wrong, someone will be sure to correct me.

The 4000 uses pigment ink. You can get refillable cartridges and load them with dye if you want. Dye ink and film will cost less than pigment ink and waterproof film. The dye ink is more dense on regular inkjet film. Be sure to use waterproof film if you use pigment ink. Superjetusa.com has both ink types and the carts.
Pigment actually has a higher uv density and Epson don't give Europeans a choice in the matter. Frankly, either works really well, you've got a bargain, did it have one lady owner?

I use waterproof film and prefer it. Dye would save you a little if you want to switch. Definitely go for the refillable carts, though. You can get 100ml of each of the eight colors for about what it costs to buy one OEM cart.

I only paid $500 and I received the stand and the network card and paper and it was a one lady owner.

It depends. Are you using FastRIP? If so, then you would use Light Black and Light Light Black slots. Our RIP uses only the Black slot. We have a PRN file that you send to the printer and it's a full 8.5x11 sheet and it prints a solid color from whichever channel you are trying to flush. This requires about 30 prints before the entire system is flushed of the previous ink. The pigment ink on a waterproof film will give you a hazy look on the back of the film. I have customers that swear it effects their burning when doing halftones. Their halftones would wash out quickly and too easy.
We switched them over to dye ink and it solved the problem.

I buy this and a second brand that is all dye myself, I have clients that love this stuff... (no other supplier but this internet company sells this stuff that I know of)

Now do you use that ink in matte black and photo black and light black?
You can use that ink in ANY of the cartridge positions...
Just make sure you have all of the inks in place before you kick it on, if you have old inks in the system, it will have to be purged out of the lines.
I have had this ink in every cartridge for testing a rip that uses all of the cartridges with black all at the same time.
