Hey all, I am fairly new to the screen printing business, own a small shop but have been extremely busy. I kind of got thrown into the business and have really been learning as I go.
Anyway, to my question. I have a customer who wants me to print softball shirts for their team. I am doing a 2 color sponsor logo on the front and then a 1 color, solid, athletic numbering on the back. I think the numbers are going to be like 1-16 or something like that. Anyway, Is there any suggestions or easier way on how I can do these rather large numbers on the back of the shirt without having to burn a screen for each one (or a couple of numbers on each screen)?? It seems like a huge pain in the butt to do this and I cant imagine it to be that way when there are so many screen printers printing jerseys. Any and all assistance and suggestions are much appreciated! Thank you so much in advance.
You can use paper number stencils, which are available from a number of screenprint supply houses, with a single screen or, if you have a transfer press, purchase heat applied numbers.

Hey thanks so much for the suggestion! You know, when I first came into the shop, I did notice a bunch of paper numbered type stencil things but assumed they were like the backs to some transfer images or something like that- basically thought they were trash. I did end up putting them in a box and stored it away in case I could use them for something.
Anyway, whole story not necessary I guess! But Thank you so much again. This site and you people here helping each other are great. This is what it is all about.

Yeah you can use those number stencils. If you ever decide to go hardcore on numbering, they also sell number screen presses. Or they also sell special mini number screens and brackets to use on your regular press. Many different options to go about it. You can also heat press your numbers if you'd like.
I was impressed with how simple the process was to complete. The screens are sold with the numbers already burned in and the jig that holds the screen makes it simple to align the number either on center, to the left or to the right.
I guess that it becomes a question of whether you want to invest the money in that type of set up or not.

Transfer Express number kits. Very inexpensive and fast to get. You can get the individual numbers, or you can go onto their site and put in the numbers you want and they will be sent that way. If you have names for the jerseys you can include the names also. Or you can use a vinyl cutter to cut them out. Very easy also.
I have a vinyl cutter and heat press, and the thing that irritates me about numbering via that method is that you can't match colors properly with the screen printed portions of the shirt. For example...if you have sponsor names screen printed on the shirts...your vinyl won't match the plastisol properly. Athletic numbering is a nightmare...period.
Transfers Express offers many colors, but everyone pretty much always wants black or white numbers. I start with the numbers and color match my screen ink off of there color. But it's pretty easy with black or white.
