I was just wondering if there is a solution to my situation. A client wants black text with gray islands in the background (printed on a white tee). I know i could basically just use 2 screens, but the client only wants to use one screen.
So my situation is that my exposure unit only has 40 watt blacklight bulbs. It's not strong enough to do fine halftones. Usually i hit or miss by underexposing the image and washing the image out slowly with warm water.
Is there any way around this. Want to keep the client, but don't know what else to do.
Exposing the emulsion around halftones is no different to exposing the film around solid colours, you need the same amount of light.
Just do an exposure test - ?5mins?, ?10mins?, etc. until you find the right exposure time.

In order for me to expose halftones, i always have to underexpose. I coat front and back. For regular exposure, a 160 mesh, i expose at 2:10, 195 @ 2:00, 230 @ 1:45 and so on.
For some reason, it doesn't come out clean for halftones. My transparencies are dark. I talk to some of my friends and they just tell me that i need a better unit. I can't afford one so i just do what i can right now.

My exposure unit uses 8 40 watt blacklight bulbs. I do halftones all the time.
I also run a Epson R1800.
With mine, I'd use a 230 screen and expose the halftones for 4:45 (four min. 45sec)
What unit do you have? I'm currently using a Lumitron UV Fluorescent Screen Exposure System. I contacted workhorse but they said it's running ok. So from then on, since i was new at time, i just dealt with it and just did what i could.
Mine is built by Ryonet and has a compression lid.
Hi Celtic,
Ever since i got my unit, I always had problems. At first workhorse said it was my power going into the unit. I checked it with an electrician and it was fine. I just think that they didn't want to send anyone out here to check it out, but can't say. I'm over it, but just trying to get things done.
