Default Best Screen????

I have a question about what is the best screen mesh count to use for just basic screen printing. I recently bought a speedball kit from blicks and it came with a wooden frame with a screen already installed. Once I was done using that screen I went to a screen printing shop and got a yard of screen that I thought most resembled the one that was previously installed. I was just curious what screen mesh count (or whatever it is called) you would recommend. The one that I bought kinds started to tear when I was installing it on the old wooden frame. Any help would be much appreciated. thanks

I'd get your mesh ready stretched, you need even tension to get a decent screen and without it you won't get the best results.
There are several threads discussing mesh count, have a trawl through the archive, it rather depends upon what knid of printing that you're planning to do, there isn't a 'basic screenprint' setting I'm afraid.

Not to highjack the thread but is a 200 mesh screen suitable for reasonable detail using water based inks?

Yes it is a good mesh for water base inks

To get your theoretical detail, divide your meshcount by 4 to retrieve a number that represents an approximate LPI (lines per inch). For instance, a 160 mesh screen would result in a 40LPI graphic. This is especially handy when calculating halftones.

The detriment to using a 200 mesh screen is getting ink through the mesh (especially white ink which is viscous.) In many cases, on a manual press and a high mesh count, you'll get a good workout trying to print.
