Can you can cut out a design in vinyl then apply the vinyl to the screen and use it to screeprint? Will this work or do you HAVE to use imulsion?

Using emulsion is always going to be the cheaper route, but yes you can use vinyl. I use it a lot when I'm personalizing names, & numbers. What I've found to work best for me is to mirror what I'm cutting, & apply the vinyl to the back side of the screen(garment side). The key is to cleen your screen right away, otherwise the glue from the vinyl will have to be scrubbed off of the screen for future use.

Ok I wasn't sure if the ink would leak under the vinyl. So emulsion is cheaper? I'm confused about emulsion. When you "cure" it in sun or flourescent light what does it do? Does it harden all of the emulsion except where the design blocks the light then you just spray the emulsion off where the design was?

You pretty much explained it all in a nut shell. There are many factors though to time, & proper exposure. Emulsion type, light source, time, distance. Ulano's website has some videos on emulsions, step wedge procedures, & what not. It would definitely be a good place to get a better understanding.
