Default Getting started in screen printing

I'm interested in starting screen printing. I'm after a simple DIY set up for at home so nothing majorly expensive. I'm wanting to make shirts similar to this in style:

How would i go about making something like this? And what sort of mesh would i need? I know the shading is mostly done with halftones. I was hoping someone could link me to a good tutorial on this and how the thread count of the mesh is relative to the amount of halftones per inch (or whatever it is) as some of the halftone tutorials around weren't quite what i was looking for.

Sorry if this has already been answered. And thanks for any help.

You may want to consider starting with something simpler than printing photographs, even black & white ones.

It is impossible to print this with a "simple DIY" setup. If this is the style you want, I suggest you farm it out to a professional print shop.

Here are some rough (low) estimate prices, which if you've done this before you'd probably be able to get by on. Not knowing what you need and the time it takes to figure it out may not be cost effective if you're just trying to make a couple shirts.. Then again, expensive is relative...

exposure unit (diy vacuum lid c/ metal halide light source) - $200 if you're thrifty + time
4 screens - $100
cheap press - $500
ink - $30 - depends on how many you want
emulsion - $40 - depends on how many you want
other associated chemicals - $100 - depends on how many you want
shirts - depends on how many you want

Time to get it right - PRICELESS, unless you have a lot of it

Good luck
