I'm a beginner, but all the literature I've read says that Carpel Tunnel Syndrome is by far the most common injury associated with screen printing.
Also, all or most of the fumes you smell are the pigments in the t-shirt burning, not the PVC burning.
My rule of thumb is to have enough ventilation that I don't smell it. I figure if I'm not smelling it it's not strong enough to hurt me, lol. Also, I find that if I keep the shirts from going to much over 320 I don't get too much smoke or smell anyway.
I have a ceiling fan at the opposite side of the garage and I have it blowing air across the garage so the fumes from the dryer are pushed towards the garage door and outside. I'm planning to set up some kind of exhaust fan as well.
