Talking substitutes/alternatives to "screen opener"????

Hi. is there any alternatives or subtitutes for "screen opener"?(like maybe mineral spirits things like that) i live in a small apartment and all my widows are covered in plastic due to it being winter and not much ventilation to be had. i have heard screen opener is pretty harsh and i was just trying to prevent all those fumes and to save some money as well.lol. now take in mind this is just a hobby until i get good enough, and i just need an inexpensive method to open up clogged parts on my screen if need be.

We use mineral spirits in our shop. Works great and is much cheaper. It still smells though.

Do you straight mineral spirits or a screen printing press wash. My press wash doesn't smell, or at least not very detectable smell.

Yes we use straight mineral spirits, right out of the can.

Ok, that's good to know. Probably cheaper and easier than ordering press wash.

Is Press Wash/Mineral Spirits a danger of spontaneous combustion on rags? I actually use paper towels, not rags myself. But wondering what precautions I should take.

A friend of mines dad owned a pizza shop once and and there was a box of oily rags that burst into flames. The amazing thing was, it was next to the water cooler and the 5 gallon jug of water melted and put the fire out. There was almost no damage except for the water cooler.

I don't know about spontaneous combustion and mineral spirits, I have not had a problem with any thing after 14 years. We have a parts washer filled with mineral spirits that has not been a problem either. We are also in a 6,000 sq ft building, so the smell is not that bad. I know the fumes from the screen openers that I have been around are far worse than mineral spirits. This is something you will have to do your homework on as far as safety.

I've used straight mineral spirits out of the can before for some other projects. I never thought it was that harsh.

Graphic Solutions Group carries a product called 'Tex-Chem Screen Opener' that is orange-based. Comes in a gallon jug and does a great job on screens. Unfortunately, it smells so nice and does such a good job that my wife confiscated it and took it home to use on the bathtub...

For some reason, they have been out of stock in Texas for quite a while, but they have locations in OK that may have it as well. They alternative stuff they send me isn't the same, and has a chemical smell... which keeps the wife from taking it from me. It would be worth it if you could find some... way less harsh smell-wise than mineral spirits.

I would use a press wash, screen openers are toxic! The press wash I use smells like oranges -pleasant- Just do a search online, I'm sure you could find a good one. Mineral spirits works-IMHO-I wouldnt use it...Still stinky.

Aerosol "screeno" is mostly replaced with blends of citrus, pine, and/or soy derived solvents in a pump spray bottle. They are less odorous and dry faster than Mineral Spirits when used as a press wash, but do have a higher cost for the better formula features.

Whether you are using "screeno","press wash", or "mineral spirits", the used rags containing the "solvent" can create heat through oxidization if they are closely bunched together, don't fully dry out, and are left exposed to air in an open trash can.

I've witnessed the aftermath twice, and rags with true-metallic ink residues are even more prone to it.

Even though certain conditions have to exist for spontaneous combustion , it's still the primary Fire Dept. reason that foot-pedal lid-operated trash cans are the norm for solvent rag disposal at bigger volume companies.

Much has been done regarding "safer" solvents and our industry. Here is a link for those of you interested in the history behind it:
