Concern over printed shirt, why is it shiny? need advise
Hi guys I just have a concern about my latest batch of shirts. I had this company in Ohio named CVL ink print them and it came out okay but one thing that concerns me how shiny the print came out. I don't recall any of my other shirts that were screened being this shiny. I hope you guys can see it in the pictures. Could they have done the old switch-a-roo on my and printed with some other method other than screening? Like vinyl heat transfer? Also, there place where the black and the red intersect, on the circle, you can clearly see the line! What do you think? Just a bad job or did I get swindled?
It looks like they printed with plastisol and maybe (Heat Transfered) after the fact to fix any blemmishes... ie fiberation or mis-registation.. Just my guess...
Its hard to tell from the pix, it looks like screen printing but with a shirt not in hand can't say. If you have a heat press, cover the design and press, that should take the gloss out.
I'll try to take more pics later but after reading Uncle John's post I'm assuming that some screen prints are glossy right after it's printed? Is it because of the ink they use? This place does vinyl heat transfers and I don't know if that method makes the design shiny or glossy. I haven't seen screen prints glossy but I guess some prints do. Thanks guys.

It does not look like vinyl to me. I don't think they would cut, weed, press 50 shirts if they could screen them.

Maybe you're right. I just haven't seen professional print look glossy like this. Also, if you look at the line between the red and the black circle you can see the intersection clearly. (It's more glossy) Is it just a bad job then? Maybe I should look for another place. Sigh, I'm a little bummed.

Sometimes with these colors and if there is a thick layer layed down a press time and when its cured it gives that shiny look . . . that just means the plastic that is in the plastisol really cured at a high temp. It should be ok. When the colors overlap you will get more of a shine due to the fact of the two layers of ink that cured at that high temp.

Toro when you mention plastisol are you talking about the heat press method? Because I paid for screen print and if this is a plastisol method then I've been bamboosled.

Yep plastitol is your basic screen print ink, then their are the more expensive methods such as water based and discharge. Plastitol is also done with making plastitol transfers, which are basically screen printed on to the paper, and then used by the person to press on as they get orders. Plastitol ink is the same type of ink on screen printing as well as on the plastitol transfers.

Re: Concern over printed shirt, why is it shiny? need advise
The shirt is screen printed, no doubt about it.
Quite likely the following things happened:
The printer used a low (probably 110) mesh for both colors. This creates a thick
deposit of ink, and a resulting gloss.
They used a large trap (overprint) between the colors.
They cured the ink at a very high temperature, adding to the gloss.
Not the worst job in the world, but as you said, the gloss doesn't look professional,
nor does the large trap. It's an old school of thought in screenprinting that makes
for these results.
