Default Printing Matsui 301 on Paper

Anyone print on paper with Matsui 301 ink? Which of the three series (RC OW HO) is recommended?

From what I have heard, the RC series is the way to go when printing on paper. But I have found that when I use it (RC pigments mixed with 301W binder white through 230 mesh) dark layers show through lighter layers on top.

Anyone have experience using the thicker series (OW HO), especially on paper?

Is there any disadvantage to using a thicker formula like OW or HO?

Can you intermix the series RC/OW/HO freely?

Thanks!

Yep, like Stan said, it sounds like you're not setting your art up right. I would use 301 for paper.

Hi Jon

Stanley and Phillip are correct that layer engineering can often make a difference; my 2 cents would be light colors always going down first, covered by darker colors repectively if traps are unavoidable.

Also, you can intermix anything in the 301 series (RC, OW, HO)

OW and HO are mixed using heavier pigmented white, the RC is largely made with clear base. You can find the formulas used to premix the 301 colors on the factory color cards ar Matsui's site and can also access them through ours. It's a great help in understanding how the 301 is produced for you.

We have a client printing a blend of RC/OW on card stock, but uses a 255 and 280 meshes. They do fully dry the previous layer(s), as I'm assuming you do also.

Happy printing!

I am printing spot colors that do in fact overlap. Not the most efficient process, I know, but I don't trust my registration enough to do otherwise.

For example in this postcard:

...the monster is printed over the background and the first layer (tan) is printed under all the other layers. (I.E. the monster isn't "cut-out" of the previous stencil layers).

Anyway in the actual print, the background shows through the RC-mixed purple (with 301W white)monster a bit. This makes sense now that I understand that RC is basically transparent Yes, I dry in-between layers.

Ovendweller, thanks for the advice on mixing RC with OW. If you are saying that produces an opaque field, I will give that a try.

Thanks everyone.

Almost everyone I know that is printing the Matsui water based on paper is using the RC series. Since you mostly want to print on white paper, the transparent nature of the ink should give you excellent results. It's amazing how water proof the inks become on card stock.
