i know how registration marks on screens work. what they're for, how to line them up, etc...
my question is, don't they somehow have to mark on the shirt as well, in order to be able to line up color number 2's reg marks with color number 1's?
i just found these forums after a quick search, and it appears there's a lot of pros in here. i don't have any fancy equipment, which i'm guessing how print shops do this. i'm just a post college student with a couple of screens...the backing--i think it's called the platen, but i could be mistaken--is just plywood.
if my question is not something you guys and girls deal with, if anyone knows of more amateur forums which would work out...i would be mighty obliged if someone could point me in that direction.

Nope.
Line the shirt up on the platen, line the artwork up on the shirt, line the screen in the first arm to the artwork, the second arm to the artwork, etc.

As solmu said you put the artwork on the platen and line the screens up to it. I usually use one of the film positives for this purpose.. once you have everything registered then just tape-off the registration marks or use blockout whichever you prefer so they dont print on the shirt...

My problem is taping affects my stroke and I'm getting a lighter print where the squeegee hits the tape. If I press harder the tape starts to peel. If I use blockout then next time I use the screens I won't be able to use the registration marks. Any suggestions? I'm thinking maybe moving my registration marks further away from the image and using a smaller squeegee. If that's the case then I'll have to allow more space around the image by making it smaller.
Are you taping up the regi marks on the squeegee side?
Put the tape on the other side.

I'm using waterbased inks so if I do that the ink will dry in the registration marks and they will become useless next time I try and setup those screens. It would be the same as using blockout.
