It has got to have Post Script or software RIP to be able to print halftones. There is free software out there like Ghost Script, but have heard mixed reviews. I would look at a compatibility list of printers for RIP software programs like AccuRIP and FastRIP. That might help you find what would work and then just get the cheapest one that fits your size requirements.

If you have photoshop, you don't need a special printer or rip for half-tones.

But anyways, if you just want a standard size printer for 'just in case' moments, you can get a refurb epson c88 for like 40$

Most of the RIP software programs are only compatible with Epson printers and some HP's but you will need to check their websites to find out. You should be able to google each of those. I know FastRIP only works with Epson's but AccuRIP and Ghost Script might support Canon. There are also other RIP programs out there too. Hope that helps some.
