Re: Pricing Question
Since you are not making money on the shirts and it is possible that you will get sub-standard shirts that won't look good in the end you should:
A: make them sign a disclaimer that all spoiled shirts are their problem
B: once you have A done, figure out how long it will take you to print them from soup to nuts and apply an hourly rate that you want.
If it take you 2 hours and you want $60/hr then charge $120 out the door (plus taxes) regardless of the number of shirts you actually deliver.
i would really make sure as well that the product they end up with is the quality you are proud for others to see. nothing like a 100 shirts walking around and every wearer advertising who made them and how bad they look!
I'd ask them if they buy steaks and bring them to restaurants to have the chefs cook them and prepare meals from them as well.
I try not to accept orders like that though. The above analogy usually makes them understand what they're doing isn't acceptable to me.
However if I were to do it, I'd say I needed extras from them, and if they couldn't supply I'd say I could supply the extras for a small fee, then figure out qty X decorating cost + labor.

I refuse to use customer supplied garments, I explain to them I must control quality. I explain this to them and normally still get the job. .... JB

I suppose your analogy works great for a restaurant business....but it doesn't work well in the garment decorating industry.
Many screen printers allow contract customers to bring in their own garments. I suppose you can call them contract screen printers, but most regular screen printers will print anything you supply to them.
As for the print price, I would charge about $2.25 per shirt for a 1 color print on 1 location (100 pcs).

I wasn't talking about contract printing, but still maybe so however I'm not a regular screen printer. And if that loses me some jobs...so be it. Like COEDS said, quality control.

I have print prices, then shirt prices. I have customers that supply their own shirts, so I'm not making the t-shirt markup, but those customers are larger accounts that print several hundred shirts a month.
look at the shirts before you print on them and just make sure they are quality. if you get some bootleg chinese knockoffs that look like they could dissolve in water then i would just refuse the business... if you do something right someone will tell 2 people about you, if you do something wrong they'll tell 10 people about the service they didn't like...

Most major brands. Gildan, Jerzees, Hanes, FOL, etc, and other garments are made in foreign countries, including China...

Quality control should be of YOUR print work, not the garment supplied by the customer.
Oh i understand Guru, i was saying though there is a difference between quality brands and those brands that are just knock offs of the quality ones. Sorry.. knockoffs could be made anywhere sorry for just saying China. I have nothing against China or their products, i'm just saying it is so much easier to find low quality knock offs for cheap prices there at say a night market or something than in the U.S. or something. Sorry... but to make it clear i do understand that a lot of great brands and products come from China.

Re: Pricing Question
We only accept customer garments in limited situations:
1. The customer has a brand and we are decorating for him
2. The customer has a 1-off like a leather jacket
In both cases, the customer assumes all responsibility for damage to his product. We never let a retail customer come to use with their own garments on a volume order.
1. We sell below retail so the customer gets a good deal from us .
2. We know the quality of the garments we use so can guarantee satisfaction.
3. Our profit margin and $/hr are built on our selling the garment as well as the service.

Print is on the center of the back 8" x 11"
In my place the price for printing only IDR 5000 = USD 0.5 for 100 pc.
Above price are print only A3 size-1 color-Black Fancy.
If include the tshirt the price become USD 3.5/pc. With spec. :
- Cotton 100% 160-180 gram/ms
- Asia size spec measurement
- Tape shoulder to shoulder
- Double stitch in hem and bottom
- Double chain stitch above shoulder
- Maximum shrinkage after standard wash machine is 1"
Diffrent when we make like this below: Printing color will change under direct sunlight
or
With same spec tshirt materials.
Our price to customer IDR 39.000 or USD 4.5/pc for order 55 tshirts.
Why? Cause the ink is diffrent which effect to our selling price.
More easy to count cost production for 1 tshirt. The hardest is counting for print cost.
Im agreed with last post above. Its complex business. Not same like 1+1=2.
ussually in my place.. quality-service-attititude in business will effect when you negotiated the price.
regards
