I'm trying to figure out how to get lower my screen printing costs. My current printer says the price is determined by the number of colors printed and the type of shirts ordered. Here's a sample quote:
100 black Gildan 2000
design #1 4 colors
design #2 1 color
design #3 2 colors
Setup/Screens/Film $471
Per Shirt $6.50
I am very happy with my printer...awesome customer service, knowledgeable, and the shirts look great. It's just hard to be profitable when the shirts end up costing $10 a piece.
Prior to finding my current printer, I had several quotes in the same price range and dealt with another business whose quote was several dollars cheaper (and I ended up getting screwed in the end). I'm just afraid to repeat my awful experience just to save a few bucks.
I just want to know if this price is reasonable and any advice you may have. Thanks.
It would be good if you can get your cost down to 7.50/pc or even 6.00/pc.... but you might have to downsize the number of different designs and up the volume on 1 design. I would do the 1 color design on black Gildan's for 6.50/pc all day. Why is the set up 471.00?
7 screens? Is that all? 7*25.00=175.00, that would be our set-up charge unless there is something more to the designs... do you have any pictures of your art?
Why is he charging you seperate for the film? most screen printers get this out of the initial set up fee which is usually $15 - $30.
Because that's the way he runs his business. He knows what he needs to charge to make a profit.
If this guy is a great printer and so knowledgeable, keep him. It's worth paying a little more to know you can rely on him.
However, the above comments are right. When you said you got 100 shirts printed, you're combining 3 separate orders, right? So you're really getting 3 orders of 33 each (or something like that) That's a pretty low number of shirts and you should expect to pay more for them.

Ok so what youre saying is that everyone else who doesnt charge for film doesnt know how to make a profit....i mean lets be real here film isnt that expensive...
but i agree what youre are saying about the 33 shirts that is a low amount of shirts so therefore he should expect to pay more. When i read the post i took it as if he was oredering 100 of each design.
Most of you guys are in your basement or garage... try having and supporting a storefront with all the bills that go along with it and you will see how much you need to charge.

No, I'm not saying that. We don't charge for film either. But if a business does charge for it, so be it. It's there choice. They know what they need to charge to make a profit.

R1, dont assume that "everyone" works out of their basement, that comment was kind of assumptive and condescending. I dont care if you have 5 autos and 10k sq ft, you're out of your mind charging 471.00 for set-up on what seems to be a straight forward print job, with 5 screens. On my block anyway.

You must have missed this comment from me as it was not meant that way and I stated so to be safe.
