You never HAVE to use a white underbase, but if it looks crappy without the white under it, you have to do it. The super opaque series is meant for dark shirts with a white underbase because the colors pop even more than regular wilflex inks and have better coverage. So it's up to you if the Super Opaque inks will cover enough on a dark shirt without the white. That becomes your choice/customers choice.
Using curable reducer will reduce opacity but I think 5% might be okay. But just test it and see and you'll know really fast if it's too much or if it will work for you.
Most super opaques aren't super thick like you might think, but mixing them up before printing always makes them a bit easier to work with.
