Hmmm just purchased the Epson 1400. Do I need the AccuRIP software to print on transparency paper? If I dont, what media type (Paper Name) are you selecting when printing transparencies on the Epson 1400?
when you go to print, select setup, then preferences, select best quality, also select ultra premium glossy photo paper.

Thank you. I read your other post on the settings subject, worked great! Except I forgot i was using Laser Printer film. Im off to get me some Ink Jet film. Question, is Kimoto film any good? Any suggestion on film?
See nsignia's post above where he stated....waterproof R-Film from ryonet . I use this with pigmented ink in my c88+ and it makes great films. Saving up to buy a 1400 with rip to learn halftones but will probably go to inkjetcarts and get their carts to refill.
There is an all black system for the 1400. All the cartridges are filled with black and accurip pulls a littel from all of them. It maximizes the use of the printer and the ink in the cartidges.

Using multiple heads sound reckless to me. Head alignment if defined by gap and stock thickness. It would seem that with even the slightest miss registration of head alignment, bad things would happen. I know the epson's have provisions for head alignment, it should be possible to negate the problem, it seems like it would be more trouble than it is worth.
With the fepson ghostscript, i had no problem getting more than enough density to properly expose my screens. Yes, it is not UV 3.0, but so what? Is it worth an extra quarter per page to reach a number which is more than is requires???
The epson 1400 is only $200, what is the rip, $495? plus another $150 for ink? That is over 2 times the price of the print!!! For larger printers, add another $300. What do i get for the extra $300? the allowance to use it on profestional equipment? Even adobe doesn't charge a sur charge to people using the product on profesional equipment.
From my develpment on the epson, it would be much cheaper to load unused heads with a simple solvent and use a single head for printing. Any other color could be used, should the primary section of the print head fails.
The only positive point of using all the heads might be to tickle each head on a regular bases to prevent the automatic cleaning mode. I've been considering making a scheduled task to tickle each print head on a schedule to try to avoid the timeout which triggers auto nozzle cleaning. Anybody know of anything like this which already exists.

This may be a dumb questions, but is there a laser printer which can handle large format printing. All I'll be doing is printing transparencies and my smaller laserjet works fine right now with some tone enhancer.

11x17 (12x18) is about the limit of laser sizes. My color phaser 7700 made really nice film on 12x18 kimodesk 4mil film. My HP 8150 prints real dense, but halftones over 45 LPI tended to band. The HP also couldn't feed 12" wide, but instead was like 11.7 which was useless for film sizes.
Toner helper is generally not needed with any laser. Be sure that the printers toner saving is turned off and density is turned up to full throttle. This is generally done with some application which ships with the printer or the front panel display. Once the toner is cranked, set the paper to the thickest possible setting, shake the toner cartridge, clean the corona and lens or whatever else can be cleaned. Set the printer to the highest possible resolution, but don't select edge enhancement or better screening or photograde or anything else with will allow soft edges.
When i switched from my phaser to my epson inkjet i had to reduce my exposure times in half. My laser was VERY dense, no need for any helper.

Thanks Fred. I think I'm going to go with an inkjet for the large films, 13x19. I'm looking at the Epson 1400. What's the difference between the 1400 and R1400, if any?
I'm using the Epson R1400 with 6 cartridges of "Blackmax ink , which is suggested when using the Accurip software on waterproof R-Films .Now I'm pulling equal amounts of black ink out of all 6 carts , instead of one for increased opacity . And I no longer have to replace other color carts that I'm not using . I'm also no longer having to try and double up transparencies or use toner enhancers .
I purchased it from Ryonet Epson 1400 BLACKMAX Ultimate Film Output System
For the whole set up it cost $1,169.69 , not cheap , but it works really well !
