I'm going to purchase a 1000 watt metal halide fixture to use with an exposure unit I am building. The guy just asked me if I need 480 volt? This may sound stupid but I have no idea what volt I need. I am going to be doing this out of my apartment so I'm guessing the volt has to be low? I don't know! Please help!
Re: What volts do u use with a 1000 watt mh fixture?
480 volt is for commercial applications, while 220/240 volts might be available in your house.
Electric ranges, ovens, dryers and some big microwaves all require 220/240 volt.
Any electrician should be able to run a 220/240 volt line if you need it.
120 volt is for all the other appliances/devices/gadgets you use everyday.

Wouldn't a 220/240v use less electricity to operate? I have mine with both 120v and 240v and I'm adding an additional 220v outlet to keep the power bill down.

At higher voltage less amps are needed, so the answer is yes.
1500 watts / 110 volt = 12.5 amp
1500 watts / 220 volt = 6.8 amp
