Post Advice for starting a home base screen printing, embroidery Biz!!

Hi every one, I worked as a screen printer and embroidery person for almost 6 years, I also know how to design an art work (using corel & photo shop), also I can do Digitizing for embroidery part.
Now I want to start my own Biz from home in California( 2bed,2car garage, rental townhome).
1-Do you think If I dedicate all my and my wifes time to this Biz,can I make a good living off that (net profit over $100K)?
Or i will need a store front ?

P.S. also I will join ASI for selling promotional stuff too.

Thank you so much in advance
you have great &green day$

You should find a member named Screenanator. Your question brings him and his wife to my mind.

YES...you can do 100k net a year from home.....first thing I'm going to tell you though...24 hours in a day are not enough.....you will let things fall to the way side...and your life will be alterted as you know it...because to do 100k a year from your house with no retail requires ALOT of invested time...days should be spent getting orders...your not established there fore you gotta make yourself know...heres what I do...1.everyday when I leave the house...I put 10 business cards in my pocket...and by the time I arrive that night I want all of them gone.NEVER think you can ever not sell to a person...evryone out there is looking for a good deal and for their dollar to go further.
2...SCHOOLS....SCHOOLS ! I said it twice because it is that important...schools are a massive poterntial for work...where else are you gonna 800 potential clients all with a common theme?...make you deals almost to good to pass up....offer faster turn around then their current person...offer the school a donation on top of the sale to them.We sell our P.E. uniforms to the school for 20 bucks a set....we "dontate" 3 dollars from every set back to the school...they think we are generous....lil do they know we are making and 8 dollar profit still !!!...8 x 800..6400.00 on that sale alone !...and that profit is net...not gross.
3.NEVER stop talking about your business...drop it like a bomb every chance you get when your in a public place....we were in Monterey one time on Cannery Row....I was checking out shops to see what was selling or looked cool....I noticed a lady make a comment to her husband..."Now these are what we need in our shop"...I casually approached...and struck up a conversation with them...turns out they have 15 stores in different tourist locations...our annual sales to them...155k
4. SPORTS.....theres a tremendous amount of profit to be made in sports apparell...if you see a sporting event...stop in..ask around...you may just make a contact...youth sports account for 42% of our business...and with parent matching apprell thats another 7-9%...so you can see sports are huge.
5.Give them something no one else will..low minimums...fast turn around.....be agressive in your sales and stick to everything you promise....if your dependable...they will be loyal...too many people have been burnt by lazy printers who snatch deposits then sit on orders...fast in fast out has been ourkey to making huge profits....most people will pay a lil more if they know we will go above and beyond....also make yourself available to your customers 24/7....the key to good home based profits is unset hours.....let them know its ok to call at 10pm to make changes that your not a 8-5 brick and mortar....let them know your there to work for them !

Those are just a few points that we have seen success with...they may or may not work for you but are worth a try.
Another thing...DO NOT go into debit to start this business....credit card payments will doom you....by what you absolutely need as a minimum to get by....then struggle to use that capital to expand your business....we fianaced our first piece of equipment this year....a Roland VP-540...why?....was it too expensive?...no we could have paid cash for it and got a huge discount....but we leased it with a dollar buy back...the lease was at the begging of our CPA...LOL

Good Luck and Happy Prinitng!
Ron

The VP has a few more bells and whistles...but the main thing is the 40% faster print speed...we thrive on speed...fast in fast out....so we wanted the fastest...most dependable...most reguarded machine...we choose Roland!

There is one very important thing that you need to check out before going forward in the garage. You need to check with your city ordinances about doing it out of your garage. When we started it was out of a garage in another town that looked the other way. They knew what we were doing and gave us a business license anyways. Where I live its an absolute no no. No manufacturing out of a residence. All it takes is for one neighbor or one of your competitors to complain and you could be shut down or worse charged some pretty hefty fines. Be careful and research the crap out of it. Good luck!!!!
