Here is one of my newbie questions. I am printing red print on a black shirt, I did a quick test to see if I was going to need an underbase and it looks like I will. I havent been printing long and havent had to underbase anything yet so here is my question. Do I just put a light coat of white down or would I want the white to look as if the shirt is done? 110, 156 or 200 Mesh then do the red with a 200 or higher?
Thanks for all the help

We utilize a handpress and generally do our white underprints on an 80 screen. Unless you have fine details (red lines with white lines underneath or something like that) I would advise staying away from anything too fine. And though you didnt ask, on an 80 under I typically do 1.5 pt overhang, sometimes 2.25 on a squirrelly shirt.
For an underlay we use a 156 and also trap the white so the red will over hang. I would link on an 80 the hand would be very rough. On the red we would use either a 156 or a 195 depending on the art. We used to use a 110 on underlay bet have been using higher mesh for that. It also could depend on which white ink you are using.
Since it seems you are printing the job right now and do not have time to purchase new ink, I would recommend using a 110-137 as your underbase white. If I could see the image, it would help so we could assist you on how to setup your art as well.
However, if you have time, I have to recommend Excalibur Ink 550 BRIGHT RED. Underbasing red is not necessary with this ink, it prints very bright and very clean. You can get it from Davis international or All American Supply.
