Question Printing Method Help. Thanks.

Hey, what's up everybody? This is my first post here on the forums and I look forward to gaining and sharing as much information as possible.

My situation is as follows: Myself and some friends (artists, business practitioners, etc) are looking to start up a clothing company to distribute and produce various articles of clothing. From a design perspective, most of the work is freehand drawings with digital touch-ups (ie. Photoshop and Illustrator.) We are relatively comfortable in that area. However, after that the steps required to continue is a mystery. I have been doing my research especially on these forums and I have some questions of my own.

The first question I have is regarding the different types of printing methods. I have concluded that the niche segment of soft "water-based" ink printing is becoming popular (Affliction, Monarchy). I was wondering if anybody knew what method is used for such a print and if there are any companies out there that print custom designs using these methods? For anybody who is unclear as to what I am referring to, these particular prints are very soft and can not be felt. They are "one" with the fabric itself.

Sorry for the long post but any information will be greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone.

What you are looking for is a company to print pigmented discharge prints - this will give you the hand that you are looking for. It also requires that the garments you use are discharge-able. Many brands are - some work better than others and some dyes don't discharge as well as others.

Yes we discharge on 100% cotton shirts. Certain colors and brands work better than others. Red, Navy shirts sometimes have issues. Also you have to ask if the shirts are 1st run died, meaning they didn't take a yellow shirt and dye it black later. Also waterbase is an option again based on shirt color and art work, For shirts with polyester there are bases when mixing inks that simulate waterbase using palstisol inks like Fashion Soft. Adding soft hand to a straight plastisol would also make it somewhat softer hand. So in conclusion there are several methods used, depending on the garment that printers use to give the softest hand possible
