Hello, I am wondering if anyone has had problems with their screening companies.
We sent about 60+ shirts to our screening company and he messed up the logo by rotating it 90CW.
Now this a repeat order as we have asked them to do this same screen back in October and December 2007 and it was fine back then.
Regardless they have my EPS file and a JPG so they should know the proper orientation. They were rushed that day with other customers orders and hence made the mistake.
Long story short, at first they agreed to completely rectify the situation by replacing the whole shirt (cost of cut and sew labor, printing, fabric). This was all a verbal agreement over the telephone.
Now, the screen company is saying they will only refund us or give us credits for the costs of the screening. They said it is not in any screen companies policy to replace the shirt even if it is their mistake.

Generally in screenprinting and embroidery businesses it is not the custom to
replace garments that have been incorrectly crested but instead it is common to refund only the cost of the cresting. I hope that you feel that I am being more than fair by offering you this credit arrangement
So you mean to tell me if they happened to drop a bucket of paint on my shirts by accident they will only cover my screening costs and not the whole shirt?
If anything they should be giving us extra. The customer to whom these shirts were intended for really needed this for their clients. Now we delay them and make them look bad and in turn we look bad.
Please someone tell me this is wrong. We are not that big of a company so maybe we are small time to this screening company and that is why they are giving us the run around. Short of taking them to small claims court, what else can we do?
That IS ridiculous. I've been in the same situation before... the company printed my shirts in the wrong color ink! However, when I told them it was wrong, they immediately offered to cover the cost of the shirts, and then reprinted the new ones i got CORRECTLY for the originally quoted price.
The company you're dealing with is tryin to snake out of it! especially if they are willing to admit the problem, they should most definitely replace the shirts or pay you back. It's just good business! I'm sure any other screen printer would agree
Yes I have it in writing in an email where they admit their mistakes. In the same email is where they also state they do not want to cover the costs of anything but the screens. I am very upset, but do not want to burn any bridges. I really need these shirts for my customer and I am not in the position to take a loss right now.
Hell....our first year in business, we embroidered about 400 "pigment dyed" sweats, and some fuzzy fleece. We left a letter out of the name of the company. Man, was that a costly mistake.!! Too hard to repair, we replaced them all. You'd think someone would be watching every so many shirts for mistakes!!
ya i'd def push to get your money back and NOT worry about burning your bridges with the company... there are plenty of printers out there who will do much better business with you and not make mistakes
We've been contract printing for the last 18 years. If we make a mistake, we replace the shirts first. Then, we see if they will take the rejects for cost. If they do, we get paid normally, plus recover the cost of the bad shirts. We only lose a little labor, which may not be ideal, but it's certainly honest. However, a very careful proofing process puts the pressure on the customer to sign off on the job before we start it. If there is a problem, then it's their fault, not ours. We will usually cut them some slack on the reprint though, but we're not eating mistakes we don't make. I think the printer you're dealing with should be let go, and find another. Maybe they've made too many mistakes, and can't afford it anymore. Good luck
I've been printing for 4 years and I have had to eat several runs of shirts. My policy is: I'll pay for my mistakes and you pay for yours.

I did the same thing on a run of tie-dye hoodies ($22.00ea my cost)....that one hurt.

I can honestly say this was not our mistake. As I have stated they have done this exact screen job for us 2 times before: October 2007 and December 2007. They did a great job on them.
Fast forward to January 2007 and they have my EPS file as reference and a JPG to see, they simply were in a rush that day and screwed up.
A little history is that we used to go to a cut and sew place to get our shirts made and they would send our stuff to this particular screen printing company. So our cut and sew was the middleman. In July 2007, this same screening company screwed up another big order by leaving out a letter in one of the words. They had the EPS file and for whatever reason modified it and ended up deleting a letter. Anyway, our cut and sew place refunded us the whole amount and gave us extra credit and incentives as an apology.
In January 2007 our cut and sew place closed shop so we went to the screen printing company directly since they were the ones who did all our screens in the past. Now we are facing this problem and getting the run around.
Thanks guys for the responses, will let you know how it goes.
I do some contract printing. If I made the mistake I will always pay for the shirts. You should look for a new printer

I'm sorry, I wasn't implying it was your mistake. It was obviously their mistake, and I think they should take care of it. I would reimburse the customer for the cost of the shirts if I had made that mistake.
Sounds like they promised to do just that and then thought about the cost involved (cut/sew/fabric etc.) and backed up. I suspect if it was a $2.00 Gildan shirt they would have replaced them with no question. They seem to be hoping that you won't push the issue. I say you should push the issue.
Hope they do the right thing for you.

haha sorry I never thought you were saying it was my mistake. I was just explaining more of the situation to be clear for everyone
You are correct these are not gildan shirts and a bit more pricey. It is about $10/shirt for cut and sew labor and for the fabric.
So it would cost them about $600. I even think they should screen this order for free since they have delayed us and our customer, but I am such a nice guy I will even pay for the screens just as long as they cover the $10 per shirt. I am contacting them now so I will let you guys know how it goes.
Ok got a response. They agreed now to credit me the $600 in screen printing jobs. I know this is a compromise in order to keep me as a customer, however I am not satisfied because now I have to cover the $600 for the shirts (so now I am down $1200 until I get paid from my client) and it will take me a while to get my $600 in credits from the screening company. As a skeptic I am also worried they will use short cuts on my stuff to "minimize" their debt to me.
After all this, I am ready to switch printers so should I just ask for the money and take my business elsewhere?
Yeah, that's a bunch of crap. The screen printer that I do business with sent me a sample to color match a customer request. The customer liked the sample and I sent the order and the American Apparel shirts. The shirts were printed in colors other than the sample colors. Green and tan turned into green and red once, they replaced the whole order and then it was shipped green and gold. The owner was very embarassed and as a good business should, he replaced the order with American Apparel shirts a second time. That's just good business. If they made a mistake, they should take care of it, and this company did. Your company in this example should admit their mistake and do the same.
Unfortunately, it looks as though you're going to have to chalk this one up to a lesson learned and move on to a different printer. Some companies just don't want to lose money and aren't in the business of making customers happy. I would say to take the $600 credit and get them to reprint, because it doesn't seem to me like they'll actually cut you a $600 check. However, who's to say that they won't mess up a second time? Tough call, good luck.

For sure you should be looking at another printer no matter what...To me, this is a red flag...I don't know a lot about the printing business but it doesn't take a genius to know that this is bad business...
What happends if your business really grows and your doing thousands of shirts per run? I wouldn't want to take a chance with this guy...Try to get all your coin back and move on...I would even let my next printer know what happend and why you are coming to him/her..

Shouldn't I be looking at the next printer's guarantee(s) and telling them my concern? I mean I am so skeptical now and I want to make sure my a$$ is covered for next time.
