DTG has a really soft hand. some of the new water based inks for screen printing have a really soft hand also.

All non-opaque waterbased ink has a soft hand, and the nicer stuff (like Matsui) has a considerably soft hand with opaque colors.

You can get lower quality but ok waterbased ink at some art stores, a brand called Speedball. It is what I started with.
You can get Union Aerotex at dickblick.com. It is nicer than Speedball. I still use it sometimes.
You can get Matsui from westixonline.com. That is all that I purchase now and it works great, even for bigger production. And the westix guys are great.
