Default making your dryer more efficient

i was wondering if anyone has done anything to make their dryers more efficient energy-wise.

i have a little workhorse 5' 110v that works great, but i'm sure 110 isn't as good as 220. the power switch went out last week so while i had it apart i was surprised to see it had NO insulation! From what i've learned about anything heat related that's no good. I went to home depot to get some of that foil lined foam used on houses right before the siding or brick goes up. i was worried that it might get too hot and let out some nasty fumes or worse, catch on fire! I ended up being able to pack 3 layers in most of it, 2 in the rest and gave it a test. It worked really well actually. No fumes and I could tell right off that the outside never even got warm.

Now i'm wondering if it's possible to somehow add a thermostat to it. Most higher-end dryers have them so it's not running all out all the time. Does anyone know if that's possible and if so how to go about it?

thanks!!
