Default getting ink to sit on fabric, 3d effect

hey guys,

As some of you may know I'm very new to the business....sorry :P

anyways.

I have finally ironed out the smaller problems with emulsion etc and I am using water based inks for printing, permaset supercover.

I was wondering, how do you get the '3d' effect on shirts? Ie if i rub my hand over the print you can feel the outline.

Also I have read a few posts where people have been told to 'thicken the stencil'

what does that mean exactly, again, new <---

thanks,

6

You can do 1) High density printing, or 2) Flock, or 3) Puff.

The easiest is puff: add a puff additive to your inks, and when they are heat set they will puff up. Gives the ink a sort of velvety raised feel.

I haven't used it all that much, but I'm pretty sure you don't need to do anything different. It's activated when it reaches a certain temperature (you'd need to check what temperature with the manufacturer). It's nice and user friendly. What curing method are you using currently?

Coincidentally I did a couple of test prints with it today... I think I should be using it a little more actually

for high density printing you need to use low mesh frames (60-110), Capillary film and (usually 300-400 microns) in order to get a good HD print.

Depending on the height you want you may need to stack the hd inks with varying micron cap film screens. You would need to adjust your off contact, usually via shims. This will take some practice to get down.

NOTE - the inks are seriously thick and tough to do manually. Can be done yet very tough.

Well, with an iron it takes about 5 seconds for the puff ink to take effect

You might have a problem with flattening it down again with the continuous ironing required to cure the ink, but it should be okay.
