Default Making a Dark Room

I just moved into a store front and it does not have a place for a dark room. Does anyone have any suggestions on making a dark room. I don't want to spend alot of money.

Thanks
Dan

build a closet that will hold as many screens you want. Add a door and bam!! Use expanding foam in the cracks to stop any light from creeping in.

Use 2X2's for a rack system

My partner used to coat screens in his closet. That was funny.

Thank you Fluid! I will do that. I'll check with the local building official to see if I need any permits. Thanks again.

I converted an office in my shop and used this same rack system. Just make sure you use good screws and use a frame to set the distance between each 2X2. Haven't had any issue and have been using this rack system for years.

Great idea Fluid, i was just about to go and buy a screen rack for 100+ bucks.

I turned my garage into a bar/pool hall/ lounge a few years back and added a 6X10 dark room inside because i used to develope my own film for photography, but since i have been doing the shirt thing i took the pool table and bar out to make room for my press and other machines. A lot of time is spent in that room.

it works like a charm. The frames might lean downwards a bit yet if you coat properly it will not cause any issues. Just make the channels tight and use good screws, not nails

The racks are nice just too expensive.

I'm setting up my darkroom in an old utility room, and I was told I could use a standard yellow bug light for my darkroom light. Is this true??? Or do I need to get something else??? Thanks

yop need a safe light. You should be able to find them at any light store or the safe light sleeves that you can place over a regular bulb.

im preparing and coating emulsion on my screen under normal light - long flourescent light. im just blocking the light to make a shadow where i position my screen and emulsion. i do the coating quickly and then place coated screen in the cabinet immediately.

just like what ive read in other topics here, wet emulsion is not very sensitive unlike dried emulsion on screen. still, try to avoid it from being exposed for a long time under a light or daylight to avoid ruining it.

good luck with your screen work!

Thank you jundogg. I was unaware that the emulsion was less sensitive while wet. I get a lot of knowledge from this site. Thank you to everyone.

it is still exposing under normal ligth/ uv light. Dual cure emulsion has more room for error over the other emulsions.

you're welcome. dont take my word as a professional advice. im just speaking speaking based on my experience. you can try it for you to see for yourself.

the learning process is more on experimenting. you'll learn a lot through experience. dont be afraid to fail, it is where youll be able to gauge the things you'll gonna avoid the next time around. you'll get the hang of it soon. just keep on trying to be succesful with your screen job! good luck
