Default Screen making

I am very new at this and just got my starter kit today. I have a shirt that a friend of mine wants me to make for him. He doesn't have the screen or any kind of drawing. Now I know I have to recreate the image. How do I go about doing this.

What do, you have?

If you have any existing art, you can scan it (but designs are rarely 8 x 10) or take a digital picture with the camera very parallel to the art so it doesn't distort.

Now trace or digitize the outline with the pen tool in Corel or a tracing program like CorelTRACE or Adobe Streamline.

Scott Fresener has an article about improving art you plan to trace:

What art do, you have? A sketch on a napkin, a matchbook, a printed t-shirt - no sketch at all?

If you don't have any graphics programs already, Photoshop is perhaps not the program to start with. It is used for photographs, and if you are just starting, you need an illustration vector program like CorelDRAW or perhaps Illustrator.

If you are a Apple user, you are stuck with the Illustrator learning curve. Prowl usscreen.com for Scott Fresener's DVD training videos. They are the only T-shirt Separation training around, and last longer than a live show.

If you are a Windows user, CorelDRAW is what you should get. Illustrator is much harder to learn and doesn't manipulate letters as well as CorelDRAW.

I have a shirt that was done by someone else. I am just starting out and my friend need shirts made up for is basketball tournament. He used someone last year so all he has is a shirt from last year. So I just don't know how to recreate the image.
