It doesn't seem like it would be that difficult...I am talking about one for a tabletop press. Rather than paying $52 for a 20x26 platen. I could probably make one for half that price.

Has anyone done this? What would you recommend for the laminate?

A lot of people go to cabinet shops and ask for the sink cutouts from formica countertops. You can also use melamine-covered particle board from Home Depot. A whole sheet of that costs half of what you'd pay for that new plated you mentioned.
