Default generating a grey plate

I'm trying to print a black and white photograph on black shirts.

I think I've been able to come up with an ok white plate for the print, but I am having a hard time figuring out what I need to do to create a grey plate to give me a bit of extra definition when I print.

To make the white plate, I just darkened the darks and lightened the lights and halftoned the image.

In the grey plate, I'm assuming I'm picking up the lights that I am cutting out of the white plate, but whenever I try to isolate those shades, I seem to just be picking up the lightest parts of the white plate.

I'm using photoshop CS2.

Any pointers?

Default Re: generating a grey plate

Duplicate the image and name underbase
Next flatten the image on a black background. Convert to grayscale (if not already) and invert the image. Adjust your image using the curves dialog by lightening the lights and darkening the darks.

Back to the original duplicate and name black or gray. Flatten on a white background and convert to grayscale (if not already). Adjust the image using curves or histogram until your happy with your black/gray plate.

You can use the color range tool and select midtones, save the selection as a channel and theres your plate. edits will be needed to make this even better
