You need an artist who can separate the job properly. Most photographs can be separated into 6 to 8 screens. it's called a simulated process. Not to be confused with 4 color process. This technique looks much better.
I agree. Simulated or Index separations/prints are more vibrant than true 4-clr process. Your using specific colors in the design rather than the pastel hues of a cmyk print. Some designs warrant a 4-clr process for the best result yet most will look just as good if not better with the other two methods.
An experienced artist is needed as well as good equipment and proper mesh counts, inks and print order.
I think the over all life of the print would be longer with a screen print. Also if your printing high volume you would want to screen print to keep cost down. I think a laser transfer may be better for sampling just a couple of shirts.
Most shirts you see out there in the big wide t-shirt world with people ,etc. are printed either simulated or Index. Remember DTG's just hit the market a couple years ago.

I better start learning more about this simulated process, etc.
Wow, I just found out how expensive it is to print process images! Can't afford that any time soon. Avg of $10-$12 per shirt for short runs. A very facinating process none the less.
