Default exposure formula?

Hi,
I'm using a 1000w metal halide, 21 inches under 1/4" glass, with an image on a transparency, on a 12 x 16, 12xx screen with speedball emulsion. Is there a formula I can use to figure the exposure time?

I tried once using the FAQ on the speedball website which said 1000w at 40" at 140 seconds. Umm, I think the screen was underexposed because as I started washing it out, I could see the image, but then emulsion around the image started washing out.

Any advice?
