Default glass for exposure unit

hello,

I'm finally opening up shop this week. Got my hands on a Caps 6-4 press and I'm fairly excited.

For the time being I will be using a home built exposure unit. It is a fluorescent light fixture that I've wired to timer and then out to a plug. I need to purchase a piece of glass to fit the top of the fixture and I was wondering how thick the glass should be.

I would like to keep it as thin as possible so as to let the most UV through (it will probably be pretty sketchy with fluorescent as is) and also to keep the cost down. I will just be weighting down the screen with a piece of wood cut to the ID of the frame.

The fixture is fairly large, I don't have the exact measurements, but it's just shy of 2'x5'. Does anyone have any suggestions for thickness? Is glass fairly strong?

I was thinking of going with 1/8" to 1/4" but I really don't know.

thanks for any help you can give,

paul

Hi Paul,

You want to use 1/4 inch clear plate glass, make sure it doesn't have a UV inhibitor. You want all that ultraviolet light to come through to your screen.
Good Luck on your exposure box.

You want to specify Un-Tempered Float Glass which has parallel sides. An older term for this type of glass is Plate Glass.

Annealed glass is safer because of the surface tempering it goes through, but the tempering defracts light.
