When printing a positive you need to have a very opaque print. There are two types of ink in an inkjet printer. The first, dye ink, is more opaque and the preferred choice. The second is pigment based ink and is more translucent to get the very nice photo archival effect you'll see today.
The next thing you'll need is a RIP program to print to a non Post Script printer if you want to accomplish halftones. A free one that many use is called GhostScript.
Ghostscript, Ghostview and GSview
I personally use a waterproof film that keeps tight registration for printing positives but is more expensive when looking at transparencies. If you have dye based ink then you can get away with a non waterproof film many times. You will need either film or vellum for printing.
U.S. Screen Print and Inkjet Technology has some forums for this type of thing and you can find a lot of information there.
Hope this helps.
