Default Does belt printing work with polo shirts?

Hi All,

Does anybody have any experience with belt printing? I have some designs for polo shirts that cover the entire area of the shirt and it seems like belt printing would be my best option. Will belt printing work for polo shirts?

I basically want to put some stripes around the entire shirt (front, back, and sleeves). What process would be the best to accomplish this?

Thanks for your help!

-Andy

You will have problems with the placket and buttons. You will only be able to print to the edge of the body or sleeves.

Startup costs for a print run on a belt printer will be high.
  1. How many do you want to print?
  2. Are there any belt printers near you?
  3. Who is sewing the shirts?

1) I'm planning to do an initial run of about 100 shirts.

2) I haven't looked into any printers in the area. I'm in Manhattan, do you know of any?

3) I am going to print on the standard American Apparel polos.

For 100 shirts you will be better off hand printing your shirts with an oversized platen. A belt printer would print that order in 15 minutes. A belt printer is an over kill solution for your job and you will have to deal with the buttons. You will have to shelter them somehow.

You can print finished shirts on a belt printer but its real use is cut pieces before they are sewn.

Are you printing something more original than stripes?

Search this forum for 'belt print' for sources we have mentioned in the past.

M & R in Glen Ellen, IL and ask for referals to belt printers on the East Coast. M&R Companies, Amscomatic, Nuarc

Call M & R on Long Island and ask Stan if there are any belt printers in the neighborhood. 718-591-7615

The Original Precision Belt Printers were made in NJ, so there may be some on the East Coast.

Here's a rough sketch of one of the designs. Other than the stripes, I plan on throwing on a logo. You think a regular screen printer can handle this with an oversized platen for just 100 shirts?

You want to print on the placket. That will never happen on a belt printer.

You will have a very complicated time even printing near the placket with screen printing and you want SOLID color all across the bottom of the shirt. You won't be happy with a plastisol print that solid - you want a stained look. Solid stripes will always look ragged at the edges, compared to a design that disguises the fact that there is an edge of the print.

Imagine fish swimming around your waist. You could print the body of the shirt in thirds and have the prints overlap like fingers interwoven. One fish high, one fish low - dove tail. Printing on a platen can only cover about 175 degrees of the body of the shirt so there will always be a gap.

When I printed all over designs, we designed images that were vertical, grassy fields, animals walking, fish, trees. You could always wrap them around the bottom printing in thirds. Stripes never match up especially when you wanted the image to link up with the sleeves.

Alas, I see that pictures is not in your vision or design.

This is the sort of all over printing that needs to be done on cut pieces and then sewn, or you have to find a very willing printer to do all the hand work you require for these shirts.
