Default Emulsion and Inks?

  • What's a good brand of emulsion for a beginner to use with a longer than 6 month shelf life?
  • What's a good brand of platisol ink to use that is user friendly?
I'm looking for some good suggestions at a middle of the road price. So far all that I have used is speedball inks and water based emulsion so I know that there is much better products out there.

Is union ink what I should be after?

Thanks

Ulano RLX or their new version
Union, Rutland or WIlflex are your best bets for inks.

Thanks.
I'm leaning toward the ulano QTX because it is already pre sensitized and has a shelf life of over a year and faster drying. Would this be a good choice for mostly T-shirt printing?

Also, do you happen to know the shelf life on the RLX? I can't seem to find it anywhere.

rlx is an older emulsion shelf life is prob around 6 mos maybe more. Youll be fine with the QTX. Its fast exposing so be careful yet a great emulsion.

Ive been using the RLX for the past 10 years and its great. Unlano is a very good brand.

To increase the shelf life keep the emulsion in the bottom of your refrigerator

One other question.
The ulano QTX emulsion says that it is designed to be used with fluorecent bulb exposure units. Will this stuff work if I use a home made exposure box using 2- 500 watt halogen work lights?

Yes it should work. Burn times will vary so youll need to do some tests to get the correct exposure yet it should be fine.

Thanks, that will give me an idea of how long I should expose my screens.
If it takes you 10-12 min. then am I right in assuming that it should take me 5-6 min. with two 500 watt lights?
How far away is your light from your screen when you expose? Mine is like 22" away from my screen.

Alas, more lamps will not really shorten your exposure time, just as many fluorescent lamps do not increase exposure amount, only AREA covered.

You can cover a larger area with 2 lamps and if there is overlap, you will get more exposure and the ?center will be more exposed than the edges ... Hmmmm

See the problem?

I just wanted to follow up and say thanks.
Today, I finally got to try out the emulsion for first time and the Union QTX emulsion worked awesome.
A perfect screen on the first try. My burn time was 10 minutes and after wash-out, it dried in about 50 minutes with a fan.

It was a good productive day
