Default lightening/darkening fabric?

Hey, trying to achieve something a little out of the ordinary here,

Are there any known ways of lightening or darkening fabric? Chemicals, additives, powders, liquids.. anything?

Say I had some different colored fabrics, and I wanted a design on them that was just slightly lighter/darker than the color they were.

To get the ball rolling... for lightening, I imagine this may somehow be possible with some sort of bleaching product, heavily diluted maybe so the color wasn't totally lost?

Then darkening.. maybe a black paint/ink/dye, also heavily diluted so the fabrics hue is only darkened just slightly?

What do you guys think? Any ideas?

Thanks!

Discharging will lighten the fabric, but it takes it to a "raw cotton" color (like an off white.

There probably is some way to do it though...hopefully someone here will have some experience with this.
