Default How do you screenprint a photo?

Hello,
Many of my designs are based on photos, not that they are actual photos but they do have posterized effects of photos that would require up to 12 inks to print by separating colors.
How do you screen print an image of this kind?

You can do a process print, using CMYK ink, or you can do a simulated process using standard separations. If you have a separation program usually you can narrow the colors down a bit and still have a decent image. Depending on the image you may get away with 6-8 colors instead of 12 if you go the simulated process route.

I would think that Screen-Printing is not a very good method to print photos with, because you'll probably have to vectorise it and break it down in seperate colour layers and this is a lot of effort for a photo.

I think photos are mostly printed digitally. As for Screen-Printing I don't know much about process printing so maybe you'll have to check that out.

An Index print would perfect for this.

Screenprinting photos can be done, but it's not for the faint of heart, nor is it a one-step process. There are some tutorials online and a bunch of posts on this forum. Cmyk works well on white tees. A sep program can get you cmyk plus a white underbase for dark shirts, or simulated process for dark or light shirts. Most images will require 5-7 screens to reproduce on press.
If you have time and patience and a bunch of screens, you can get the hang of it.

I have done a couple 4 color process jobs that turned out good.
You really need to control your technique from shirt to shirt or the results will be different on each.

I've been using Quikseps Pro and it works very well for photo style images. Reasonably priced too with great support.
