Default Pantone matching?

How does pantone color matching work?.. If a customer wants me to match a PMS/Pantone color, is it just a matter of mixing inks together?

Do we need to buy a pantone color chart? If so, where can we get one?

Thanks

Hello Daniel!

All major ink manufacturers have mixing systems. They generally use certain mixing colors or a pigment and base and the components are blending together following formulas to create pantone colors.

Wilflex has 3 mixing systems. They have MX, PC Express, and Equalizers. The MX is a finished ink mixing system, meaning the inks can be used directly out of the bucket. The Equalizers are a balanced colorant and base mixing system - so you need to mix them with a base to make a color. THe PC Express sytem is a pigment concentrate and base mixing system; it also has to be mixed at a certain ration following formulas to acheive the correct color and make finished ink.

I have attached a PDF of the Wilflex Systems.

Wilflex also carries Pantone Guides, which can be purchased through a distributor. I have attached a distributor listing.

You can also purchase a Pantone Guide via the pantone website. Most people use a standard Coated guide. This simply means the chips are coated and appear a bit more intense.

I think Mixing Systems are GREAT! (as you can probably tell )

Thanks,

Erin

Just to clear things up.. the Pantone guides represent offset printing inks. The difference between coated (Glossy) and uncoated (matte) is the paper onto which the inks are printed.

ALL of the inks used in Textile printing are simulations of PMS colors.

Contact your current ink supplier and inquire about a mixing system. All the major ink companies offer started kits which contain quarts of all the nessecery inks to start mixing PMS colors at a reasonable cost to you. From there, you build your ink inventory mixing colors as you go.

Default Re: Pantone matching?

I'm looking at the Pantone site and there are two different solid color formula guides that I'm looking at. One is the GP1201 Formula Guide (coated/Uncoated) and the other is the GP1202 Formula Guide (coated/Uncoated/Matte). Aside from the addition of the matte guide, is there any difference in the coated and uncoated guides between the two?

It seems weird, but the reason I'm asking is I can actually get the GP1202 guide with all three finishes cheaper than I can get the GP1201 with only two finishes through my school. I just want to make sure that the coated and uncoated guides are the same first.

Here's the links to the two if you need to see them to understand what I'm talking about:

GP1201: Graphics - FORMULA GUIDE coated, uncoated

GP1202: Graphics - PANTONE FORMULA GUIDE coated, uncoated, matte

Thanks!

The GP1201 is the most commonly used package in the screenprnitng industry. You will rairly if ever use a matte color.

I know that I probably won't use it, but getting all three is actually cheaper for me to purchase as opposed to just getting the two. What I really need to find out is if the other two books are the same.

Ok. It took a while to get through, but I did call Pantone and thought I'd post the answer in case anybody else ever has the same question.

The solid and uncoated guides in the two different products are in fact the exact same books, just with different colored covers - which I like since it makes them easier to distinguish at quick glance. The GP1202 just has the extra matte book to go along with it.
