Default Compressor - piston or screw type?

Hello.

My new press is due for delivery within the next couple of weeks and I need to get a 10hp air compressor + chiller dryer to run it. My question is: Which is a better choice: a screw or a piston type air compressor?

I recently learned that screw type is more energy-efficient but the maintenance cost is extremely high. Which should I choose?

I'd appreciate any feedback. Thanks.

Hi, we purchased a screw type Ingersold/Rand about 5 years ago and have had very little trouble, we maintain a schedule of maintenance and check-ups, keeping an eye on coolant levels and filters, in the past at another company we had a piston and had nothing but trouble. As with everything we found compressors have improved, but with everything, don't stick it in a room and ignore it, or it will shut you down at worst time.

I have a Keasar screw and it is flawless. This one is small, but my last shop had a HUGE one and it ran flawless too. The only maintenance is watching fluid levels, changing air filters, and tightening fan belts one in a while. I heartily recommend a screw over a piston any time and I've been doing this for 35 years.

Thanks aldenski and PTMSPORT for your inputs. I narrowed down my search into 1. Kaesser screw type and 2. Blitz piston. I think that I know which one to get now. Thanks.
