Default ever safely stretched a spring?

I use a older National 6/6 manual press. It is similar to many other presses that use springs. A spring broke today, luckily I have replacements. I quickly discovered that it is almost impossible to install a new spring. Has anyone ever replaced a lift spring on a manual press? Is there a trick or a special tool to safely install the spring?
