You can use either side.. Its just a matter of preference.. Do you want a thin layer or a thicker layer? I personally like using the thicker layer.. Especially if I'm going to use light colored ink on dark fabric.

thin side = thin coat, thick side = thick coat. it all depends on what you are printing, how much ink you want to leave on the shirt and the screen mesh. i almost always use the thin side, so it's job/personal preference.

Just my two cents. The thicker the emulsion=longer exposure times.Thicker will give you better stencil build-up for white on black and for long print runs.If your using a exposure system that is not quartz or metal halide your probably better off with the thin coating.

I've used both and only use the thick side now. We have done thousands of screens both ways and the thicker edge gives a better stencil with less coating strokes. With that being said, we also use a very thick emulsion so your results may vary so experiment thoroughly. You won't waste any screens by trying both out. Just take note of how each screen prints and look at the quality and appearance of the ink deposit and go with the one you think looks better. Post back your results if you don't mind for others that have the same question.

There is a sharp edge and on the flip side of SOME scoop coaters there is a rounded side that allows for a heavier emulsion coat.
