Someone locally is selling a HP DESIGNJET 650C PLOTTER for $500. Is this too much for this printer? I have been looking for a wide format for my shop for a while and this seemed like a good deal. Right now i have a epson 1400 should i just stay with this for now or would the HP 650 be a wise investment? Any help is most appreciated I really know nothing about plotters and such.

Oh man sorry ill be using it for Films. I'm sick of tiling films to do an oversized print. What I'm asking is should I stay with the 1400 or is the Hp designjet 650c worth the upgrade. I cant really find a lot of info on the 650 but here is a picture.

Thanks for the pic, I saw it on Youtube once my curiosity got to me. =) It's good to have the extra info in the thread so folks know what you want to use it for, and what you are already using. They may be able to give you some more help.
There is a member on here, Rick/Wormil, who says in this post https://www.t-shirtforums.com/heat-p...rs/t45387.html that he has the 650c. He is in screen printing and he is extremely knowledgable. I am pretty sure this member can answer your Q's about this printer. Maybe PM him a link to this thread, and ask him to read the thread to see if he can shed the light you need on this.

I had a 650c which I kept for a few months and then sold. They are somewhat ancient at this point, have limited memory and there are things that can go wrong with them that are difficult or expensive to fix unless you can repair them yourself. Some of the problems can be worked around temporarily meaning that even it seems to work at first, it may break down in a few months. Yes you can print films with them but I wouldn't pay $500 for one unless I knew it was in immaculate condition. Frankly I wouldn't buy one unless you are an HP do-it-yourselfer or unless you can get it for a couple hundred bucks cheaper. Ask them to print off a couple of test sheets then try getting them down to $250-300. If you do buy it, let me know. I may still have the service manual (which are no longer sold by HP) saved on disc.

Are you looking to print out positives or cut them with a plotter? There are great large format plotters and great large format printers. Which are you looking to do?

The differences between printers and plotters have faded to almost non-existent. Fifteen years ago it would have made a difference but not today. The only real plotter-like devices left on the market are for cutting vinyl. From what I have read on these forums, it seems that you want an ink jet based printer for the darkest positives. My only experience with large format ink jets has been with the HPs and Canons, but I haven't messed with either for about five years (except for the 650c I owned shortly last year). There are a ton of threads about the best printer for printing positives so I'm sure you can probably find a wealth of info by searching.

You can get an Epson 9600 which is 42" for $800 if you hunt out a good deal. Epsons are kind of the standard now for film output, a lot of the screen printing RIP software is made just for Epson printers. There are also cool things like refillable cartridges and color separation inks for the Epson line. I doubt you could find those for such an old printer.
