Discuss the different types of equipment needed for screen printing. Topics include manual screen printing presses, automatic presses, dryers, folding machines, starter kits and high end machines.
Ok i'm making some jerseys but i was just wondering if anyone has an idea on what the most cost effective way of screen printing numbers would be. I'm will to pay 400 bucks or so on a numbering system like the pocono, I've seen jerseys with art inside the number itself as well, how is that done...individual screens or custom transfer sheets then heat pressed? I want to stay away from heat pressing, not that i'm against it...Just curious on screen printing numbers thats all.
We had the pocono system for a few months and quickly sold it. We ponied up the extra cash for the vastex numbering system. Screen printed transfers are the way to go, we do those from time to time when our screen printing department is backed up and it is even easier than the vastex system. Trust me, after printing one job on that numbering system from pocono or something similar you will be done with it. Transfer Express is who we use.
I second it, Transfers Express it's the only way to go. I know someone who has a beautiful Brown Manf. Numbering machine and it just sits. If he's not buying vinyl cut from me he's using transfers express.
We use vinyl from Sthals, we also use screen printed
transfers that are great. The numbers you saw with
art inside were a new vinyl application also. I have looked at and printed with numbering systems. If you
are doing a lot of team numbering (thousands) than one
might be a good choice, if you have plenty of space to
dedicate for the equipment and screens 4", 6", 8",.
The one I liked best was made by Brown mfg.
BUT I Would stay with heat press over any of the systems. Good Luck!
Paper number stencils have always worked very well for me. Quick and low cost, You shoot one screen with a box the right size for them and off you go printing directly onto the jerseys with plastisol. I liek IC 1100 series Athletic Plastisol or their 711LF Low Bleed White and Athletic Gold. Add stretch additive or Nylobond if needed. Direct printing properly cured with athletic grade plastisol always lasts as long as the jerseys....cotton, polyester, nylon mesh, whatever. They are just die cut out in sets from brown cradt paper and glued at one end like note pads. Tear off what you need and apply to the back of the screen. Plastisol acts like glue and they stick. No reason for the screen dept. to get backed up. Maybe it's old school but it's tried and true with no returns for 35 years and happy repeat customers from football, basketball, soccer, and baseball leagues all over So. California. The Brown Machine is overkill and takes up lots of room.
Transfer express plastisol numbers are by far the easiest and most cost effective if you have a heat press...everything else is just too much time & trouble...Plus they line up perfectly!Trust me!!! I don't even do vinyl numbers if i don't have to...
This all depends on what you are trying to accomplish - transfer numbers for Txpress work great for numbers, also layering vinyl or digital transfers/solvent printing them.
There are lower dwell times and temps on transfers designed for polyester and nylon application.
If you are looking to bring it in house than heat applied graphics offer a lot more customization option without the additional inventory in screens for each font, size and layer - ie. with vinyl cutting or print/cut its all driven from your computer.
Here is one photo of a logo effect within the number by using the solvent digital printed method.

..Josh thanks for showing that example....I tried to find some of mine but cant find a whole series of example pics....the Roland works great for customizing numbers even with pics inside them...tough to beat the Roland on ANYTHING!
