Another questions about the Epson 3000 for those of you who use it for positive printing: can unused color cartridges be left in the unit or should they be removed if I only print with black ink?
I only use it for black. I don't like the resolution of the Epson 3000 for photos (I thought I would occasionally use it for printing a photo - to get the color ink moving in the lines - but I haven't due to the quality).
So, there are still three color cartridges in there. They are just sitting and have been for some time. I want this machine to last as long as possible and correct maintenance is important to me. Should I remove the color cartridges and flush the lines? Or can they be left alone? They will, most likely, never be used, as this printer only does one thing for me and does it well, more or less.
Colour cartridges are fine when left in, the black ink goes a bit thicker when old - it doesn't print as well.
3000 ink is the same as 9000 and the 9000 cartridges are cheaper, you can also buy cleaning cartridges to keep the heads open, they're cheaper.
Check these guys out Accurip Software, Spot Process VueRite they have an ALL BLACK system for the Epson 3000 we just switched and love it..no more wasted color slots...amke em all print black .... we also bought their RIP software and are very happy....densest films we've ever had....

You shouldn't need to print colour, every time you switch on it will do a little clean and keep the heads open. Even when not printing colour the inks will disappear.
