Default Mesh tension

I am using a manual press with aluminium screens of various mesh counts. I bought my setup secondhand and have started getting a bit paranoid that the mesh has become loose over time and is not giving me the optimum print. Can anyone recommend a way to gauge mesh tension without having to buy a newton tension meter?

Thanks in advance.

sorry, i shouldn't have used the word 'loose' i'm more concerned that they are not as tight as they should be and was wondering if i could purchase an instrument that would allow me to see if the screens are tight enough. i know that there is a newton tension meter, but it is just short of $450!

Loose is a good term, it fits. A tension meter is the only thing that I know that is reliable in measuring mesh tension. Odds are if you are using rigid frames they are loose. Roller frames are the way to go if you want tight mesh. In the long run they are cheaper.

tension meter is the only thing that can tell you the tension on your screens.

In our shop its very important to have tight screens. No less than 30 newtons. If your screens are tight you will less problems. Get a guage and use it. We process from 100 -200 screens every day and tight is important
