What are your settings on it? Usually epsons will print dark enough if you place the paper media to BACK LIGHT FILM and "BLACK".
The first film I printed using my Epson 1400 turned out the exact same way. I also use CS3. In your printer setting there might be a checkbox labeled "Quick Print" (or something like that), uncheck it. This did the trick for me.
I don't know how your printer works but I set my media on glossy photo and print setting to photo or best photo and that does the trick.
Also, what transparancy film are you using? If you get the stuff form your local office supply place there is a good chance it's not going to work.
I use the R-Film and it works great...without a RIP.

I had the same no help problem with Epson. Their new printers are only recommended for Epson inks, Epson paper and Epson transparencies. Some printers are simply not designed to do what we are trying to make them do. I finally returned my Epson when I realized it simply was not designed to do what I wanted it to do. It looks like it would have been a great buy for someone wanting to print water resistant photos. But, even for that, you need Epson only products.
I don't recall if it was the 4880 model. The box had a big burst image advertising "new technology, water proof ink".
I hope you can get yours to do what you want it to do, I went back to my old Epson 820 using PrintPal.com cartridges for 6.99 each. It's on its last leg though.
I'd like to find a printer that only prints black. I've had lazer printers recommended to me, that is probably the way to go.
It is funny, it seems we all are posting, but nobody reads.
I stated here, like in others posts, dye ink produces dark blacks, enough to expose, using only one transparency.
I been using it for a while.
I tried with my laser printer before.
I had to double stack to get dark enough for expose them.
Then I tried R-film , with pigment ink. Still is needs one sheet on top of the other to get decent dark black.
Then I tried dye on another printer. Since the first test it was very dark.

I have a 4800. We print on waterproof film. Use high gloss 250 or line art. Check "use only black", and set resolution to 720 or 1440 for very dark blacks. It works for us. Hope it works for you.
I've been using a HP Laserjet 1020 for years, it just prints plain black (no other colors) nice and dark. I also use Better than Vellum from Casey's Paper Mill www.caseyspm.com it's the best paper around.
The HP costs around $120 and the laser cartridge costs around $80 and you can get around 1000 prints a cartridge.
Here's a quick fix that will give you something fun to experiment with. Go to Ryonet's website and download the free trial version of AccuRip. It's a very easy rip software and you will be able to print out very black films right away.
Then when all the customer's jobs are done, you can experiment with halftones!!

I've been looking at the HP lazerjet. They advertise 1000 prints from an $80 cartridge but I've been skeptical.
Thanks for backing up their claim, I'll take a closer look into this.
