Default epSON 4800 for FILM POSITIVEs HELP

I have had the printer printing positives for over a year now.

Now 2 of the other color cartridges other than black have drained and have no ink which i dont even use them. So what are my options? Looking around the forums i couldnt find a direct solution for application.. but would this work??

buying refillable cartridges & filling it with head cleaner
DTG Inks - Refilable 4800 Empty Cartridge

and only keeping ink in the black?

NEED INSIGHT ASAP!! THANKS IN ADVANCE

You have to have "fluid" in all the ink cartridges at all times or you will damage your print head. Periodically, the printer will spit ink from all the channels into the capping station. In addition, you will need to push the fluid out of all the nozzles when running a head cleaning. This happens on all piezo print heads, but you never notice this because you are generally printing from all channels and can't really tell how much ink is drop downed.

So the answer to your question is yes, get refillable cartridges. Put the black film positive ink in your two channels and fill the other channels up with either cleaning fluid and distilled water. The printer will not know the difference between ink and other fluids. Just don't use regular or drinking water because of the minerals in them.

Hope this clarifies things for you.

You don't have to put 50/50 into the other cartridges. It can be 100% of one or another, or 50/50 if you want.

As far as which cartridges to put the black ink into, that depends on what printing software you are using? If you are using a RIP software, then you can contact your distributor and they should be able to tell you which channels are being used by the printer. For example, MultiRIP only used the Light Black Channel to print film positives when setup as a hybrid. If you are using the standard Epson driver, then which cartridges did you run out of the fastest? That should tell you which ones you were using the most. Otherwise, you might want to put the film positive ink in all the black channels for safety measures until you figure out which ones are being used. Then just empty any of the black channels that aren't being used into one of the black channels being used and fill that one up with cleaning fluid or distilled water. Just remember you need some type of liquid in there or it will damage your print head.

You might want to check out the film positive ink that has UV inhibitors in it that will give you a dense film when it comes time to expose it. You also might want to make sure that you are printing in Grayscale instead of color or you might pull fluid from one of the non-black channels.

Good luck.

thanks for useful info

so i got my fillable cartridges in & figured out that the resetter goes on contact with the cartridge before i put it in...

so i replaced 3 of the carts that were out.

the first 2 were okay. the icon shows full but instead of filled in.. its a hollowed out icon.. stroke no fill on the icon

& the last one i tried.. after putting it back into place it still says..

NO INK CRTG

I even took it back out & tried resetting again
No luck.
now im pretty lost.

Could be bad or defective chips.

Try GENTLY rubbing a clean pencil eraser on the cartridge chip. then reset it and put it back in. sometimes this helps when I've got stuck cartridges.
