Default Proper way to use exposure unit

Hi. I'm upgrading to a larger exposure unit from my current small AWT Pro-light. The Pro-Light had served me well over the years, but I've had rubber blanket issues, which were probably due to our misuse.

I read in this forum before that prior to exposure, it is wise to cover the frame with a piece of black cloth. My questions are:

1. What type and how thick should the cloth be?
2. How large should the cloth panel be? Should it cover only the inside of the frame or extend beyond the corners of the frame?
3. Can I use a cut out rubber tyre interior to cover the four corners of the frame to keep it from tearing/cutting during exposure?

I'd appreciate your answers. Thanks.
