Re: Experience with Sprite!? I have no direct experience with dts but have researched these units for the last two years, as well as watching them and kicking the tires so to speak at the shows. I can't really get a good feel on their value in the workplace because the people who have them don't really elaborate on their experiences with them, especially on this forum. All I ever read is the owner/operators of them "like" them, that's it. Nobody really talks about cost of operation, reliability, speed, consumables, issues or maintenance.
When trying to decide whether or not to add one to our shop, I had to assume many things like they were faster than film, relatively reliable for at least the first few years of operation, easy to maintain etc. Basically I had to take the salesman's word for it, which is dangerous to say the least. Due to their high cost, and our familiarity and experience at just using the film, I decided against buying one. We run through an average of 70-80 screens/week and that just wasn't enough, in my opinion, to justify paying 20K+ to replace something that we spend less that 4K/year on (film & ink for printer). I wondered if the dts would even be working 6-8 years later by the time we started to see ROI. The epson r1800 and injet film are tested and proven. And, filing the library of films doesn't take up too much space, nor does it take much time to prepare our screens for exposure, and the r1800 is bullet proof reliable. The use of film positives really isn't a bottleneck in our shop at all. Sure, we could do more, faster, but right now we don't have the jobs backing up to need to increase production. |
